“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
This is a verse taken from Matthew; specifically, the Sermon on the Mount. It jumped out at me this morning as I was deliberating what to write about. The part in particular that stood out to me is the part about a city. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
It’s an interesting thought. Cities, especially nowadays, are so bright that you can see the light reflecting in the night sky even if you can’t see the city itself. And if you plopped that city on a hill…there would be no hiding it.
This is what Jesus is calling His disciples to. We are the light of the world because we are reflecting the love of Jesus to the nations. If we are a light to the nations, we are like a city set on a hill.
And that should mean that the brightly shining love of Jesus should never be hidden within us. It should be shining out, spilling over, into every part of our life. We should be a city set on a hill that can be seen for miles.
Not that we are supposed to lift ourselves up. We aren’t all called to great fanfare and public visibility. Some of us are called to a quiet life of lighting up the little places around us. But we should be open to however God wants to use our lights.
Jesus is our light. Therefore we go and show that light to the world.
