This is a mildly momentous occasion: this is 100th Secretary’s Corner.
Is this crazy to anyone else? Maybe it’s just wild to me. But it’s been two years since I started here in the office (technically because I took two months off for my study abroad, I’ve only work a year and 10 months…but still), and a little less since I started writing my weekly profound or not-so-profound thoughts in here.
A lot has changed since then. I have changed a lot since then. I’m sure if I went back and reread my old SCs I would cringe at some and be pleasantly surprised by others. I started work here when I was seventeen and BOY did I feel it at first. The learning curve felt steep; this was my first job and I didn’t want to screw anything up.
But here’s the thing: I felt the same starting another job this summer. I have some more life experience (not much) under my belt, but new things still bring new challenges. But I also noticed that I was able to adapt a lot quicker. I figured things out. I know from what works and what doesn’t.
Even from a design standpoint I’ve grown. When I made my first posters I was uncertain and inexperienced. As I was reflecting with someone about this, I realized anew how far I’ve come. Just-started-at-the-office me would be amazed by the posters I can whip up now. I thought I would always struggle with design, as someone with a less artistic eye. Word, I could handle. Choosing a poster color and font? Well…it’s easy now. It hasn’t always been.
New often means growth. Not always, though. We can choose not to grow sometimes. Life brings a lot of unique challenges and callings. Yet through it all, God is faithful. We have the opportunity to spend every minute of every day of every year growing and learning with him. And that’s a pretty wonderful thing.
